A Dream in Marble (Taj Mahal)

India is home to many historic and artistic monuments, with the Taj Mahal being one of the most famous and beautiful. This iconic structure is a symbol of love, and is often associated with proposals and gifts of its replica. The poet Rabindranath Tagore referred to the Taj Mahal as "A Dream in Marble" and for many it is a "Poem written in marble." The Taj Mahal has also been recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Tajmahal is a stunning architectural masterpiece that was built by Shahjahan, the Mughal emperor, in memory of his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. The emperor loved her deeply and after her death, he wanted to give her a special gift that would last forever. He commissioned the construction of this magnificent tomb, which took more than 17 years to complete.

Tajmahal is located on the banks of the river Yamuna, in the city of Agra. The monument has an arched doorway that leads to a breathtaking view of the structure. A beautiful footpath surrounded by a lawn with green tufts of grass and a line of sky-high Cyprus trees on both sides lead to a raised rectangular-shaped platform called the mausoleum. The middle of the platform contains fountains which look very attractive at night.

The raised platform has four tall pillars called minarets. These minarets stand like four sentinels guarding the precious enclosure. The tomb within is enclosed by sculptured walls of pure white marble, with artistically painted walls. The side walls have a divine touch as they have inscriptions of the Holy book of Quran.

The reflection of the whole structure in the still waters of the Yamuna, on a moonlit night, is said to be an unforgettable sight unseen anywhere else in the world. Tajmahal is a relic of India’s glorious past. Therefore, it is important that we preserve this noble monument of love in its original charm and splendor for future generations to enjoy.
